Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today

Windows, Mac and Android users are no longer alone in their access to Google Drive's online repository. Now iOS and Chrome OS users can install a client and pull down their data and docs (though, the promised Linux client was nowhere to be seen at IO). The iOS app has all the features that make Drive drive great on Android, including OCR and picture recognition. As part of the demo, Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management for Google Apps, showed off the apps ability to decipher and index text from receipts he had taken a picture of. Perhaps more impressive though, was his ability to simply type "pyramids" and have his vacation snapshots pop up. There was no metadata attached to the images identifying them as the pyramids in Egypt, Google was able to recognize the landmarks by analyzing the photos.

Obviously, Drive and seamless integration with it is key to Chrome OS's success. Now the browser-based OS finally has a native Drive client allowing you to quickly sync and access your data on the lightweight Linux machines. The ability to sync files with Chrome OS is great, but more importantly, an update to the web service has now made offline editing available -- perhaps the most requested feature. Now with offline access ironed out and all the major desktop and mobile OSes under it's belt Drive may actually be ready to challenge peripheral competitors like Dropbox.

'Security gates mean we can't get into parks'

ELDERLY and disabled people who rely on mobility scooters to get around Bristol say they are finding it hard to get into the city's parks.

Mobility scooter users told the Post they are being stopped from using the parks by security measures intended to deter motorcyclists, which have seen many park entrances turned into impassable obstacles for people on four wheels.

Mobility specialist Bob Sansom, who runs Access Able in St John's Lane, Bedminster, said park gates across the city had been turned into a series of "Checkpoint Charlies".

Locked gates at neighbouring Victoria Park have prevented him from using the area as a quiet practice track to give potential customers a test drive.

He said: "While it's understandable there is a need to keep motorcycles and scooters out, the new locks, gates and angled access bars mean our parks have become no go areas for many disabled and elderly people who need powered scooters and chairs to get around outside.

"Mobility scooter or powered chair users are virtually unable to access parks without going through the rigmarole of obtaining keys from the city council.

"Getting hold of a key is all very well if the mobility scooter user lives locally and only needs to access one park, but it takes no account of the more adventurous users wishing to use one or more of our parks as handy shortcuts across the city.

"It means just about every sector of the community can use the city's parks – apart from the elderly and disabled who would appreciate them the most."

Mr Sansom said footpaths through parks were frequently the quickest, safest and the most pleasant way of travelling for people with limited mobility and made an ideal place for people to get used to their new vehicle.

Mobility scooter user Michael McNeil – who lives in Hartcliffe and travels up to five or six miles across the city every day – said the decision to lock the gates had hindered his use of the parks.

He said: "Victoria Park has one gate which I can just about squeeze through – the rest of them are gated, locked or blocked by high steps so I can't get out the other end.

"Giving people keys is not the answer as all I am trying to do is use the quickest and safest route to get from my home in Hartcliffe into the city centre.

"I would need half a dozen different keys if I had to negotiate every checkpoint in every park along the way. By blocking all the park gates I am obliged to stick to the footpaths and roads."

Councillor Gary Hopkins, Bristol City Council's cabinet member for environment and community safety, said: "Victoria Park does have an access point useable by motorised scooters as do other local parks.

"Often gates are part closed later to deal with the motorcycle menace."

Continuing our mid-year review of the top trends of 2012, in this post we look at the emergence of the Visual Web. Two of the hottest products in the first half of 2012 are the best examples of this phenomenon: Pinterest and Instagram. But one or two swallows don't make a summer. Beautiful design is a key part of online business in this era, which has resulted in more images and video all across the Web.

Pinterest: The Fastest Growing Social Network of 2012

There's no doubt that image-based social network Pinterest has had a stellar year. According to comScore, it now has a global monthly audience of nearly 30 million visitors. It was just under 12 million at the start of this year. comScore reports that Pinterest has grown 4377% since its public launch in May 2011, with a steep uptick that started around December last year.

Pinterest's user base is skewed towards female users. Ben Hovaness of TBG Digital did an analysis of this, using three different sources. Forget white, middle class males (cough), it looks like women are driving the Visual Web!

Instagram: Helping Facebook Become The New Kodak

The biggest news story of 2012 so far was all about the Visual Web. On 9 April, Facebook announced it had acquired mobile photo sharing app Instagram for $1 billion. The deal was important to Facebook in two main ways: 1) it increased Facebook's mobile presence, thanks to Instagram's more than 30 million iPhone and Android users; and 2) it helped Facebook in its goal to become the place where people upload their photos.

As ReadWriteWeb's Kevin Kelleher memorably put it earlier this month when Facebook bought another Visual Web startup, face recognition company Face.com: "Facebook is cornering the market of what we used to call Kodak moments. They are becoming Facebook moments."

The Instagram success story points to a key reason why the Visual Web has ramped up this year: tens of millions of people now carry a high quality digital camera around with them everyday, in the form of smartphones like iPhone and Android devices. That's led to a huge increase in online photographs, which Instagram savvily tapped into early.

The Visual Web is about much more than Pinterest and Instagram. Blogging service Tumblr continues to expand, driven by the quick, image-fueled blog posts of its users. Visually stunning apps like Flipboard and 500px are also growing fast.

It's 2012, welcome to the Visual Web era.
