Ask Forgiveness, Not Permission: Why Dish ?Ad-Skipping? Tech Irks TV Execs

skipping1When Dish announced their new ad-skipping tech, response was fairly muted. Sure it was some cool technology - the experience is seamless in that you notice maybe the first second of a commercial and then a little notification pops you over the commercials entirely - but TV execs are reportedly upset by Dish's unilateral decision. Fox's Peter Rice said it was "a strange thing to do" and NBC is still evaluating it. However, what is really interesting is that Dish decided to go ahead with the service at all.

All I can say as a consumer and customer of Dish is that convenience is more important to me than anything, so when I want something, I’m willing to do just about anything to get it. I was happy when I heard while working at Dish that the Auto Hop feature was coming to us because it was exactly what I wanted. I can skip commercials on my PrimeTime Anytime recordings with one button per show, and that is easy as pie. You see, I already skipped commercials from time to time (or most of the time) and I was tired of rewinding to find the beginning of the show since I had “over skipped.” When I get what I want, I am a happy customer, employee, and a wonderful person to be around. I guess you could say Dish helped me improve my image.
