Create a Moment Together: Have a Picnic for Two
New hope for Metro rail system for Bristol
HOPES that Bristol will have a fully functioning Metro rail system have taken a massive step forward.
Bristol North West Tory MP Charlotte Leslie, who led a cross-party delegation of city and regional MPs to meet transport minister Simon Burns last week, has now been given official confirmation that the Government has been convinced that it needs to look at the case for the so-called Henbury Loop Line – a rail link from a reopened Henbury station to the Severn Beach line.
Under current plans presented by the West of England Partnership, there would only be a reopened 'spur' to Henbury station which would mean that passenger trains could only stop there and return the way they came.
It would also mean that anyone travelling by train from Shirehampton to Henbury would need to go all the way into Bristol and out via Filton to reach their destination.
Ms Leslie has argued forcefully that a spur instead of a loop would represent a significant disappointment and leave the city's Metro system as a "massive missed opportunity".
Ms Leslie said: "Plans for mass housing development risk unacceptable congestion on north Bristol's roads, unless a loop line is in place.
"The loop would also mean people in north Bristol would have easy access to workplaces in and around Avonmouth, which has recently been designated an enterprise area."
Now, however, the possibility of a loop has been given considerable weight by Mr Burns.
And Ms Leslie is looking forward to working together on the project with Mayor George Ferguson who spoke in favour many times during his election campaign.
Ms Leslie, right, said: "The plans for the Metro, as they stand, fall short of ideal. While they are a massive step forward, I believe that without the Henbury Loop, it will be the missed opportunity of a generation.
"In short, as the plans stand, the line would 'stop' at Henbury, not link up to the Severn Beach Line ... meaning passengers travelling from Redland or Clifton Down looking for a connection to Cribbs Causeway would have to go all the way into Bristol and out again via Filton.
"The ironic thing is that the track is there for freight now – we just need the green light for passenger services along with a reopened Henbury station."
In his letter to Ms Leslie, Mr Burns said: "I was very interested to learn about the Bristol Metro Phase 2 and to hear your view that it should include services on a full loop line through Henbury and Avonmouth rather than for trains to turn back at Henbury as currently envisaged in the work commissioned by the West of England Partnership. As a result of the case you put forward, I agree with you that this merits further investigation, given the future plans for housing and commercial development in the area."
Department for Transport officials will be happy to work with the partnership on this task. I will confirm this to them, strongly suggesting that any work to assess the scheme should include looking at the feasibility of introducing services on the whole Henbury Loop."
Ms Leslie has now launched a petition and campaigns on websites Facebook and Twitter to ensure that as many voices are heard to bring pressure on the partnership.
This can be found at www.henburyloop. bristolpetitions.com. There is a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/henburyloop and Twitter users can follow Ms Leslie at @CLeslieMP then #henburyloop
She said: "This scheme is vital to the future of Bristol and I will be fighting until it happens.
"I hope the campaign for a Henbury Loop brings businesses, charities, and residents together to fight to get Bristol on track.
"And to get things done in Bristol, political parties need to stop bickering and pull in the same direction.
"I have already involved Mayor Ferguson in these initial discussions and I look forward to working with him further."
Earlier this year, Ms Leslie brought together the region's MPs who signed a joint submission to the Department for Transport to fight as one for the region's best transport interests.

Dominick Cruz knows nothing about pop culture (VIDEO)
Fighters are focused people. They spend so much time on training and rehabbing and watching fight video and talking about fighting that sometimes, pop culture escapes them. Case in point: the trivia challenge Fuel TV held for fighters Dominick Cruz, Kenny Florian, Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping. Though Florian, Evans and Bisping did OK, Cruz did not. The UFC bantamweight champion has been rehabbing his knee, and it's clear the man didn't click on Yahoo! OMG while trying to pass time.
For real, Dominick? I'm not a movie person, but I know that not every movie is named "The Notebook." Also, you don't need to read US Weekly to know Bruce Springsteen's nickname, Dom.

Rice Bombs in Meeting With Senators
As PJM’s Bridget Johnson reports, President Obama’s dice-rolling attempt to clear the path for Susan Rice to succeed Hillary Clinton appears to have bombed. Ms. Rice, the president’s ambassador to the UN, called for a meeting with three of her most vocal Republican critics — Senators John McCain (AZ), Lindsey Graham (SC) and Kelly Ayotte (NH). The senators obliged her this morning and, evidently, came away from the meeting more troubled than ever. The problem ought to be obvious: Rice cannot possibly have a good explanation for the preposterous story she...

Turkish Airlines and Irish Youth Team Up in Fight against FGM
Strikeforce returns with stacked card, includes Gilbert Melendez and Daniel Cormier
Strikeforce is back!
Well, they are with at least one show. When they canceled their second straight show in October, they promised a "stacked card." The idea was to make up for the two missed cards in September and November. Well, they have delivered.
MMA Junkie is reporting the fights are set for January 12 in Oklahoma City, where the ill-fated Nov. 3 event was supposed to happen. The line-up is:
-- Gilbert Melendez defending the lightweight belt against Pat Healy
-- Heavyweight grand prix winner Daniel Cormier taking on Dion Staring
-- Middleweight champ Luke Rockhold fighting Lorenz Larkin
-- Nate Marquardt's first defense of his welterweight belt against Tarec Saffiediene
Not bad, right? Every men's belt that has someone holding it will be defended. The big question is will this be Strikeforce's going away party, as they have struggled late in 2012. The promotion, owned by the same parent company as the UFC, would easily be folded into the UFC. However, they still have a contract with Showtime to provide fights. The promotion could still hang on.

Apple's Eddy Cue reportedly fires Richard Williamson, who oversaw the iOS 6 Maps team
We aren't apt to ever hear this in official fashion, but Bloomberg has it on good authority that Apple's newly-promoted Eddy Cue has just fired the guy who was unfortunately leading the Maps team at the time of iOS 6's release. If you'll recall, Cue was placed in charge of both Siri and Maps during an executive shakeup back in October, and it seems that he's clearing the runway in order to make things better in the months to come. The report also mentions that Cue is "seeking advice from outside mapping-technology experts and prodding digital maps provider TomTom to fix landmark and navigation data it shares with Apple." It's assumed that the goal here is to install a new leadership team within the Maps group, but it's unclear if it'll happen prior to Google's own standalone iOS app becoming available. For those curious as to why such a drastic move had to be made, head over to Apple's Cupertino campus and use iOS 6's Maps app to search for "convenience store." Evidently, the closest one is some 1.5 hours north in San Francisco. True story.

You have three seconds? Watch this knockout
If you have three seconds to spare, you can watch this knockout. At the Professional League of MMA event in Poland, Ivhan Bibiatov made quick of Mateusz Piechocki. If you're short on time, skip to the 1:30 mark for the start of the fight. If not, see how the introduction and the ring girl's saunter around the canvas takes longer than the actual fight.
Few things are as efficient as a swift kick to the face. The official time on the knockout is three seconds. The good news for Piechocki is that he was sitting up after that knockout.

Fire service receives 32 flood-related calls in Bristol area
The family with the baby, who became trapped in floodwater in Aldwick Lane, near Blagdon, called Avon Fire and Rescue Service for help at about 10.30pm and fire crews gave advice over the phone.
A rescue crew with a boat was then brought from Bedminster to take them to dry land. They were then passed over to the care of ambulance crews.
At 1.23am crews spent five hours pumping out large volumes of water from the Tesco store in Thornbury after the store became flooded.
And many residents living in Soundwell Road, Kingswood, Bristol were forced to leave their homes when the block of flats became flooded.
Fire crews used an aquavac to mop up large volumes of water. Crews also pumped out water from garages in Paulton.
Areas of North Somerset were also under water with Salthouse Fields playground in Clevedon a no-go area and difficult conditions on the Portbury to Failand lane.
Six people also had to be rescued from caravans in Somerset during heavy rain overnight.
The rescue - which took place in the early hours of Sunday at Blue Anchor near Minehead - saw fire crews use boats to reach the stranded people.

Alessio Sakara planning appeal of DQ loss
Saturday's UFC 154 bout between Alessio Sakara and Patrick Cote ended in controversy as Sakara was disqualified by referee Dan Miragliotta for throwing illegal blows to the back of Cote's head. UFC president Dana White said Miragliotta did a "horrible job" because he allowed Cote to take too many hits and called the fight a DQ and not a no contest. However, Miragliotta told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday that the commission in Montreal told him the fight had to end in a disqualification, not a no contest.
Miragliotta also explained what constitutes an illegal blow to MMA Junkie:
"Even though most of your hand is hitting the back of the head, if your pinkie knuckle is hitting him in the ear, it's a legal shot," said Miragliotta. "Maybe that's what people don't understand. They said, 'Oh, it's the back of the head.' It is the back of the head, but it's hitting him in the ear.
But Sakara's manager denies that Miragliotta warned Sakara, as Miragliotta said he did. He also says he didn't see the blows to the back of the head. Luckily, we have the magic of photography to see.
This one, from Yahoo! Sports photographer Tracy Lee, shows Sakara's hand brushing Cote's ear.
This angle shows a clear blow to the back of the head, though. Shot from above the top of the cage, there is no impediment in showing where Sakara was hitting Cote. Sakara's camp is planning to appeal the ruling. Meanwhile, White already said a rematch between the two will happen.
