New deputies take on Royal role

A MEMBER of the Avon and Somerset Police Authority and a university vice-chancellor have been appointed deputy lord lieutenants of Gloucestershire.

Shazia Riaz, of Downend, and Professor Steven West, of Mangotsfield, are among three deputies announced by Gloucestershire's lord lieutenant, Dame Janet Trotter, pictured.

Dame Janet has been the Queen's representative for the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire, which also covers the South Gloucestershire unitary authority, since October 2010.

The number of deputies is dependant on the area's population and those chosen to fill the role have all made significant contributions either to national life, their local communities, or both.

Dame Janet said: "It has been a wonderful and busy first year for me and I am delighted to announce new deputies to assist in the work of the lieutenancy. Their role is important to Gloucestershire life and their varied backgrounds will enable us to have deep roots into the county and to continue to serve it effectively in future."

The high number of events and duties performed by the lord lieutenant makes it necessary to have deputies to share some of the workload.

Mrs Riaz has been an independent member of the police authority for nine years and is also a member of the Avon and Somerset Probation Board.

Professor West, 50, became one of the youngest vice-chancellors in the country when he took on the role at University of the West of England in 2008. He joined UWE in 1995 as dean of the faculty of health and social care and later filled the role of deputy and acting vice-chancellor.
