Youngsters have their chance to shine at youth cricket finals day

FRAMPTON Cotterell's School Road ground is the place to be on Sunday with no less than five Bristol Youth League cup finals scheduled to take place.

A hectic timetable kicks off at 10am with the Dave McCarthy under-11 play-off between Bristol and Downend and the Urban Windows under-15 final between Downend and Nailsea taking place on adjoining pitches.

These matches will be followed at 1pm by the Frank Benner Under-13 Cup final between Claverham and Thornbury, and the Don Brooks Under-17 Plate final which brings together Bedminster and Thornbury.

And the curtain will come down at 4pm with the South West Glass Under-17 Cup clash between Bristol and Chipping Sodbury.

The Bristol and North Somerset youth leagues meet next week in two representative matches.

The under-13s lock horns at Cleeve on Monday while the under-11s clash at Long Ashton on Wednesday, both at 2.15pm.

Shawn Bennett's unbeaten 129 off 119 balls (eight fours, eight sixes) helped Bristol West Indians race to their first win of the season in the WEPL's Second XI League.

The opener was in dominant form as BWI chased down a target of 216 at Midsomer Norton in 36 overs, losing only three wickets.

Earlier, Vincent Nembhard claimed 4-22 from nine and Bennett 2-41 as Norton were restricted to 215-8.

Dilpreet Singh (5-25) bowled Old Bristolians Westbury to a 21-run success at Brislington, for whom Nick Henley top-scored on 62. David Fairless had earlier claimed 4-58 with opener Freddie Oldfield hitting 58 for the visitors.

Nick Crane (3-17) and Mike Norman (3-19) put Winterbourne on course for a six-wicket win over Nailsea, who were bowled out for just 103.

Geoff Flynn's 5-28 from seven was in vain for Keynsham in a 50-run reverse at Taunton Deane. And 50 exactly from both opener Sam Curley and Matt Kearsey could not save Weston-super-Mare from a 28-run setback at Cheltenham.

United Banks remain in pole position in Division Two of the Bristol & District A XI League thanks to a five-wicket victory at YMCA.

Skipper Aaron Williams (3-22) and Edwin Morris (3-25, both from 12) teamed up with Bilal Raja (2-23 from nine) to restrict YMCA to 87 before Nick Phillips (47) saw Banks to the points.

Suhail Farooq's burst of 3-29 from ten could not save Frenchay from a five-wicket setback at Pucklechurch while Dennis Talbot's 39 was a highlight of Bradley Stoke's 18-run success at Frampton Cotterell.

In Division One, opener Phil Cottrell (69) and Mike Headford (54) put St Mary Redcliffe on course for a 94-run home defeat of Coalpit Heath, for whom Steve Gwinnell hit a battling 70.

And Josh Kerry (3-4 from only nine balls) and Alex Shovelton were the heroes in Bishopston's 108-run victory at Bitton.

University Staff secured only their second win of the summer in the Bristol & District Second XI League, overcoming Bristol Pakistanis by six wickets. Jon Drake (5-22 from 12) helped restrict the home side to 147 before Staff eased to a much-needed victory.

Openers Will Christofi (76) and Dave Marshall (66) pointed Chipping Sodbury towards a 23-run home success over Failand & Portbury, Tony Garton following up with 4-39 from 12. Liam Terrell (4-14 from six) and Linus Haigh (3-18 from eight) bowled Coalpit Heath to a 96-run win at Hanham.

And club chairman Vic Cater (3-19) with Navin Dahiya (3-49) paved the way for Frampton Cotterell's four-wicket home defeat of local rivals Hambrook.

The Globe Sports Bristol & District League stage an open forum at the County Ground on Tuesday (7pm) to discuss possible changes to the structure of club cricket in the region.

All member clubs are urged to attend the meeting which will include a presentation from Steve Silk, the Gloucestershire Cricket Board's Cricket Development manager.
