Scheme for 20mph limits in city go before council cabinet

CABINET councillors in Bristol will next week vote on plans to make all residential streets in the city 20mph by 2015.

On Thursday, July 26, Bristol City's Council cabinet will meet to discuss a report which says £26 million should be committed to a six-stage scheme to roll out the speed limits across all areas.

The city will become one of the first in the country to bring in the reduced limit on all but the busiest roads.

This follows two trial areas in South and East Bristol proving a success.

The combined area of the two trial projects included 500 roads and 30,000 households.

If the plan is approved next week, the 14 neighbourhood partnership groups in Bristol will be consulted on appropriate signage for their area.

Main roads with a 30mph limit will also be discussed with neighbourhood partnerships, with a view to introducing 20mph limits on main roads around shops, schools and parks as the bare minimum.

Dual carriageways and other existing 40mph and 50mph limit roads will not be affected.

The first phase of the new limits will link the two pilot areas with the city centre. The new limits will then spread outwards into the more central suburbs, and then beyond.
